The Moor — Sheffield Phase 2
Scottish Widows Investment Partnership
SWA was commissioned as Civil & Structural Engineers for the re-development of the 6,800m2 Phase 2 site at the heart of the Moor shopping district in Sheffield. The development comprises of a new 3-storey major space user retail unit, a further 4No. 2 storey retail units, a walkthrough mall-bound by a series of 8 restaurants and a new leisure offering including an 9 screen cinema complex.
Initially, the project involved the demolition of a series of existing structures containing deep basements which require the development of complex demolition, sequencing, temporary works designs and some extensive site remediation works. Dilapidation monitoring and condition surveys of adjoining structures were also undertaken.
Hybrid piled and spread foundation solutions accommodated complexities associated with the existing site features including a 6m cross fall, historical mine workings and shaft, the existing basement structures, variable ground conditions throughout and adjoining structures.
Superstructure designs were developed to provided maximum future flexibility for our client and consist of a steel frame structure stabilised by a combination of portalised sway frames, reinforced concrete stability cores and diagonal cross bracing. A series of 28m steel lattice trusses span the basement service yard and provision for future mezzanine floors and additional stores were also considered in the designs. The cinema element of the design works incorporated isolated acoustic detailing throughout.
