X Flapgate Ship Impact Design

The flapgate is constructed from structural steel and retains a hydrostatic head of 16 metres of seawater. As a result of the study, the existing ‘H Caisson’ was chosen to provide a sacrificial protective barrier against ship impact.

The study used state of the art finite element techniques to investigate the complex structure-to-structure and fluid interaction during a seismic event.

SWA’s scope also included survey and interpretative reporting, structural design of strengthening (to BS 5400), blast loading assessment, fracture mechanics studies, and production of the Safety Case Documentation (DSR).
